The Serious Leisure Perspective

The second episode in the Information and Leisure video series provides a succinct and dynamic overview of the Serious Leisure Perspective, or SLP. After defining leisure, the SLP’s key concepts are introduced and illustrated, namely: casual leisure, serious leisure, devotee work, and project-based leisure, as well as all their sub-types. A common mis-reading of the SLP, an assignment for students, and a critique of the SLP, are included. Along the way, discussion questions are posed to enhance personal reflection on one’s leisure life. This video draws almost exclusively on the work of the architect of the SLP, Robert A. Stebbins.
